Shaded pole motors are AC single-phase induction motors. The auxiliary winding consists of copper rings, called shaded pole coils. Shaded pole coils (rings) are designed so that the axis of the magnetic pole is offset from the axis of the main pole. Magnetic field coils and additional shaded pole coils generate a weak rotating magnetic field. When the stator is energized, the magnetic flux of the pole body creates a voltage in the shield coil, which acts as the secondary winding of the transformer. The current in the secondary winding of the transformer is not synchronized with the current in the primary winding, and the magnetic flux of the shield pole is not synchronized with the magnetic flux of the main pole.

In a shaded-pole motor, the rotor is placed in a simple C-shaped iron core, with half of each pole covered by a shaded-pole coil. When alternating current is passed through the power coil, a pulsating magnetic flux is created. When the magnetic flux passing through the shading coil changes, voltage and current are induced in the shading coil, which corresponds to the change in the magnetic flux from the power supply coil. Therefore, the magnetic flux under the shadow pole coil lags behind the magnetic flux in the rest of the coil. The rotor produces a tiny spin in the magnetic flux, which causes the rotor to spin.
